Robotic Surgery Introduces in Turkey

Robotic Heart Surgery Program that we will begin to use in the Memorial Hospital was introduced to the media at 01.11.2003.

Robot Aesop from the USA was bought from Intuive company, and the whole system was checked by company officer Dr Adrian Lobontiu and the operation stages were tested on a calf heart.

Robotic arm called Aesop, acts as the third arm of the surgeon during the operation and provides the position of the endoscope. The robotic arm can be activated with voice commands through a computer called Hermes System. This system has been received FDA definition in 1994, and it is the first surgical robot. While it holds the endoscope in the position by completely mimicking the human arm in shape and function, it never gets tired and any problem is not encountered such as misinterpret the verbal orders of the surgeon. Change of the endoscope position provided by the verbal order can be very fast, and it can be fulfilled the numbered 3 endoscopic position command held in the memory without causing any confusion.

With this system, coronary artery bypass surgery can be performed through a window of 3- 4 cm opened at the left side of chest after the preparation of mammary arteries in the three small holes. By this method one or two vein can be bypassed just for now and by combining it with the balloon-stent, more veins will be able to be bypassed.
